Each November, Japanese custom is to celebrate a young child's rite of passage with a day of family festivities known as "Shichi Go San." It is during this time that children ages three, five, and seven don kimonos, visit shrines, and receive the "1,000-year candy" Chitose Ame--a traditional pulled-sugar confectionery given by parents as a popular symbol of longevity and growth.
