Marking the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Feodor Chaliapin in 2023
The Chaliapin Steak Born at the Imperial Hotel
In 1934, a steak was created for the Russian opera singer Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin during his stay at the Imperial Hotel.
This dish consists of rump meat made tender by marinating in onions, with a deep flavor created by a generous amount of sautéed onions instead of sauce.
In 1936, when Chaliapin visited Japan again, the then-general manager Tetsuzō Inumaru proposed naming the dish after him, which he graciously accepted, and it has since become one of the Imperial Hotel's classic popular dishes.
