Born in 1963 in Shimane Prefecture, KOKIN is known for his unique “Contemporary Rimpa” style, characterized by bold compositions using materials like lacquer, acrylic, silver powder, and aluminum powder. The Rimpa style, which brought a fresh perspective to folding screen paintings during the Edo period, is renowned for its distinctive use of bold compositions, gold and silver leaf, and dripping paint techniques.
Although KOKIN never intentionally followed Rimpa traditions, his profound respect for nature, nurtured during his childhood in Shimane, naturally aligns his works with the essence of this style.
Originally a typographer, KOKIN was discovered by his mentor, the late master Toshimitsu Imai, who inspired him to pursue a career as a painter. Since then, KOKIN has showcased his works in galleries not only in Japan but also internationally, in cities such as Seoul and Paris. In 2004, he created a massive mural for the French restaurant La Table de Joël Robuchon upon its opening in Tokyo. His works are also displayed in many prestigious hotels and restaurants, including the Imperial Hotel, Hyatt Regency, and The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo.
